The National Railroad Museum

Located in Green Bay, Wisconsin, The National Railroad Museum is one of the oldest institutions in the United States dedicated to preserving our railroad history.

The origin of the National Railroad Museum dates to 1956, when local individuals advanced the concept of a national museum dedicated to the American rail road history. Two years later, a joint resolution of Congress recognized the Museum as the National Railroad Museum. Since then, the Museum has operated as a privately funded 501 (c) (3) educational organization with a mission to foster an understanding of railroading and its significance to American Life. What began as an effort to acquire a single steam locomotive for a city park has grown into one of the largest rail museums in the nation. It now serves over 75,000 visitors annually. Today, a professional staff of 12 and over 100 unpaid staff members welcome visitors from all over the world.

The Benefit Companies of Green Bay is the Museum’s Health and Dental Insurance broker.  We are proud to support the uniqueness and longevity of this historic museum.

Please visit The National Railroad Museum for more information on upcoming events and exhibits.

There are still good things happening in the world!

Despite the economic downturn and daily bad news, good things are still happening. Mission Discovery (www.missiondiscovery.com) work in the slums of Mexico, Honduras, South Africa, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica, as well as in underserved areas of the US, providing much needed housing to those who have none. The Benefit Companies is excited about this work and is financially supporting Mission Discovery in its efforts.

Mission Discovery coordinates short term mission trips to these areas and provides all logistics, materials, housing and food, to school, church and employee groups who are willing to spend a week serving the poor. Most of the work includes building a 12 x 16 ft house (an oversized garden shed) for a family who has nowhere to live. Volunteers work all week building the house, present it to “their” family, and come back to the comforts of their own home.

Mission discovery volunteers have built 1000s of homes over the past 20 years. They will never run out of work, only volunteers. Anyone who has participated in volunteer work like this will tell you they received more by their giving than what they gave. If you are interested in supporting Mission Discovery or joining us on the 2009 trip please contact us.

2008 Charitable Contributions

The Benefit Companies is proud to support local charities. During the year 2008, we contributed to more than 20 local charitable organizations and causes. The lists of organizations we donated to include Corporations Caring for Kids, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Mission Discovery, United Way, West Suburban Christian Academy, and the YMCA of Metro Milwaukee.

As individuals, some of our staff also donated blood to the Blood Center of Wisconsin, and we also participated in the Waukesha Backpack Project where school supplies were donated. We also made a donation (half was donated by the staff) to the Waukesha Food Pantry. Some of our staff also participated in the American Heart Association Summer Walk.
